Will I feel a lot of pain if you use a dental needle?
There is a common misconception that if we use a dental needle, you will feel a lot of pain and that the needles are horribly big. The truth is that dental needles come in different sizes, and we select an appropriate size based on the type of injection we're providing. In this office, we use techniques designed to minimize tissue irritation and help make the injection as comfortable as possible.
How big is a dental implant?
One of the ways to replace missing teeth is with dental implants, and there is often a question about how big the implant is that will go into the bone. Is it a big screw? Not necessarily.
Dental implants come in different sizes depending on factors such as the available bone, the location in the mouth, and the tooth or teeth being replaced. We select the implant dimensions based on the individual patient's anatomy and treatment plan.
Is local anesthesia going to hurt?
One of the biggest concerns for many people in a dental setting is wondering whether the local anesthetic injection is going to hurt. You may feel a brief pinch, pressure, or some discomfort during the injection.
We use techniques in this practice to help make the process as comfortable as possible, including carefully administering the anesthetic and taking our time throughout the injection.
Will you force me to open my mouth?
Some procedures are lengthy, and some are shorter. We are always working within the limited space inside your mouth. Sometimes we're working on back teeth, and to make them accessible, we may need you to open your mouth wider.
We don't want you to be unnecessarily uncomfortable. We'll communicate with you throughout the procedure, take breaks when appropriate, and do what we can to make the appointment comfortable. If your jaw is getting tired or you need a break, let us know.
Are dental treatments always associated with pain?
Dentistry and dental treatments are often associated with pain, whether pain is the reason you came to visit us or you're concerned about discomfort during the procedure itself. We try to minimize that as much as possible.
You may feel some discomfort during certain parts of treatment, including when local anesthetic is administered. Once the area is numb, our goal is to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. If you feel pain or significant discomfort while we're working, let us know so we can adjust what we're doing.
If there is no pain, does that mean there is no problem?
A lot of times, we as patients think that if there is no pain, there is no issue. That is one of the biggest misconceptions because some dental conditions can develop without causing noticeable pain.
This is why regular dental checkups are important. Many patients are seen about every six months for preventive care, but the appropriate schedule depends on your individual oral health and risk factors. Regular evaluations give us an opportunity to identify changes before they become larger or begin causing symptoms.
